Time, dates & appointments.
Today's lesson is the time-and-dates block — telling the time (è l'una, sono le due), days of the week (lunedì to domenica, never capitalised), months and dates (DD/MM/YYYY like Indian format), and the polite phone formula for booking the doctor, the segreteria, or the questura.
Pick a lesson to start
01Telling time
È l'una for 1 o'clock; sono le due for everything else. 12-hour casual, 24-hour for trains and exams.
02Days of the week
Lunedì to domenica. Six end in -dì. Italian doesn't capitalise day names.
03Months & dates
Gennaio to dicembre. DD/MM/YYYY — same as Indian. Italy half-shuts in agosto.
04Booking appointments
Vorrei prenotare un appuntamento. Phone-first culture. Be on time. Cancel 24h before.
Italian punctuality is stricter than India
Being 15 minutes late for a university appointment or a housing viewing is considered disrespectful. 'Italian time' is a myth in professional settings — arrive a minute or two early. In social settings with friends, 10-15 minutes late is normal. 'IST — Italian Slow Time' does not apply to bureaucracy.
